Festival, Community, and Folk Club Concerts

Seancara in Concert

Festivals: Anytime we get the chance to participate in a folk or celtic festival we jump at it if at all possible. We love the atmosphere, the music, the audiences, and the other performers. Besides getting to really show what we love to do to a larger audience, we love the workshops: both the Canadian festival style workshops of getting on a stage with other musicians and playing together, and the more instrructional based community workshops. Every year Chris and Jay conduct teaching workshops in bodhran and Celtic guitar at the Water Valley Celtic Festival and Chris has taught numerous bodhran classes at festivals and Scottish Games throughout Canada, including the Fergus Highland Games. Barb has a Fine Arts degree in Music Education from the University of Calgary and is a skilled music educator. We also LOVE getting together with other musicians on the stage and seeing what comes out. Some of Barb and Chris's most memorable times with ClanTerra are festival workshops, like at the Canmore Folk Festival when J.P. Cormier and Richard Wood recognized we all knew a bunch of the same tunes so decided to just get on stage and start playing. We played together non-stop for 50 minutes, to the amazed delight of the crowd. In Yellowknife at Folk on the Rocks we got a chance to try out some Afro-Celtic rhythms with Alpha Ya Ya Diallo and his group. It was one of those magical moments that stay with you for years to hear Barb and Matt (ClanTerra's other fiddler) play celtic reels over the amazing rythmic grooves of Alpha Ya Ya Diallo's band.

Seancara is too new as a group to have developed those kind of memories, but Chris and Barb have brought the skills and experience of past concerts and tours to Seancara, and newcomer Jay has breathed new life into the music and performances.

Community and Folk Club Concerts: With Barb and Chris's concert and touring experience, combined with their long time friendship, they manage to create the perfect blend of stories and music to create an intimate and memoral concert. Stories like: how they came to meet the decendant, right here in Calgary, of the man who wrote their favorite "traditional" Irish ballad; or their frantic dash across Scotland with a 6 piece band and a mad Scottish accordion player, just to arrive 3 minutes after their concert was supposed to start. Combined with their large repertoire of tunes and songs they create an evening not soon forgotten. They have also frequently played as backing musicians for Irish dance troups and schools so love to create joint concert evenings of song, story and dance. If appropriate, Seancara can also combine concerts with school concerts, instructional workshops, and house concerts.

Just a few of the musicians the members of Seancara have shared the stage with in Workshop style performances through the years.

You can hear edited excerpts of Seancara music under Music. Most of the demos were recorded live off the studio floor with no overdubs, so what you hear is what you get. Here are a few full length versions of some of the tunes as well as a short clip of Barb's singing:
